5 awesome ways to make your New England wedding unique (and avoid being #basic)

As you start to plan your New England wedding, you might grow frustrated or even discouraged by how limited the options for personalization & customization seem to be. Sure, you want your wedding to feel classy and elegant on some level…but above all, you want it to feel like YOU, like an actual reflection of who you & your partner are as a couple. And that can definitely be tricky to do when you keep stumbling upon the same things over and over when searching for inspiration photos and unique wedding ideas. After all, the last thing you want is to be like every other generic couple on the planet, or to hear the words,

The good news is, there are actually PLENTY of ways to incorporate your fun quirks into your day while still having it feel like a proper wedding! (And just a quick little insider secret from a wedding photographer—weddings are sooo much more fun to photograph when they have plenty of personality in them.) Here are a few of my favorites!

  1. Consider a non-traditional dress

Your attire is definitely one of the best ways to express your unique personality and style on your wedding day. Think about it—You express yourself through your clothing every other day, so why should your wedding day be any different? White gowns are beautiful, and if that’s your style, go for it! But don’t be afraid to think outside the box and try a less traditional color! This bride made the bold choice to rock a black dress for her wedding, and she looked absolutely FABULOUS.

2. Incorporate things that scream YOU into your details & decor

If you’re like me and love your pets maybe just a little too much, why not order a custom cake topper that features your fur babies? If you and your partner have a movie or TV show that’s practically a core component of your relationship, how cool would it be to dress up as the main characters and re-create a scene from it for your save-the-date photos? Don’t be afraid to lean into your unique quirks and obsessions when coming up with ideas for your wedding. It’s your special day, and it can look however you want! There are TONS of Etsy shop owners who would be more than thrilled to design any custom wedding decor piece you can dream up, and help you bring your unique wedding ideas to life. Not only will you be creating a more memorable wedding day—you’ll also be supporting a small business/independent artist!

3. Choose New England wedding vendors who truly care about helping you personalize your day

How can you tell if this is important to someone you’re considering hiring as a vendor? They’ll usually say so right on their website! This is hugely important to me as a photographer, and I have a list of other amazing vendors who share this passion for helping creative couples craft their dream day. Check out this list of some of my favorite local vendors!

4. Write your own vows

It is SO special and meaningful—not just on your wedding day, but for many years after—to hear heartfelt vows written by your partner just for you. Long after the big party is over, your vows will pop back into your memory every time something that was mentioned in them occurs in your day-to-day lives. You’ll think of them whenever you make that one special inside joke the two of you have had since the beginning, or when you carry on that special tradition you promised you’d keep forever. And you’ll smile. Guys, seriously, don’t skip this one. Even if you and your partner opt to keep these custom vows private, writing & reading them to each other will still give you that amazing lasting memory.

5. Be open to trying some fun poses in your photos

You don’t want to be like every other couple out there, and you DEFINITELY don’t want stiff, generic, cookie-cutter wedding photos! The right photographer will help you loosen up in front of the camera and actually have fun taking couples portraits. Okay, sure, maybe you need to get a fair amount of formal portraits. But after that, give some of your wedding photographer’s ideas for unique, fun, creative poses a try!
